New! The Church of the Village Community Meal Opens Its Doors!!!

Trial Run and Benefit Luncheon - Feb. 11 at 12pm
Community Meal Grand Opening - Feb. 18 at 12pm

soupkit

After almost two years, the Church of the Village will again open its doors to the community for regular sit down meals at no cost. Under the church program "Hope for our Neighbors in Need" (HNN), which also includes a weekly food pantry, the Church of the Village will host a 12pm meal for the community every Saturday beginning February 18.

Meals will be cooked by volunteers in the church's newly renovated kitchen. Because the kitchen has not been used before in this capacity, on Saturday, February 11 at 12pm, HNN will host a "Trial Run and Benefit Luncheon", in which volunteers will create and serve a practice meal, just as it will be cooked and served each Saturday. Members of our church and extended communities will be invited to donate a suggested $10 (more if you can, less if you need) to attend this luncheon. In an effort to frame our new meal as one part of God's greater work of breaking down class barriers, transforming community, and struggling against poverty, we have invited the Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing (IAHH) to do a presentation during the luncheon, which will include witnesses from formerly homeless individuals and an update on policy advocacy affecting the homeless. All proceeds from the luncheon will go to IAHH.

We hope you will consider joining us for these important milestones in the life of our ministry. To volunteer at the Community Meal or to RSVP (by February 5) to the Benefit Luncheon, please email vista@churchofthevillage.org.

Celebrating Black History Month

bhm The Church will be celebrating Black heritage for the next four weeks with special music and readings during the Sunday service. On March 4, we'll have a special worship program featuring Majestic Praise, followed by a potluck luncheon. We hope you can join us.

February Justice Reading Group

Touch Interested in learning more about justice issues and how our faith intersects with them? On the 3rd Sunday of each month, we meet after church for a brunch (Donations to offset the food will be collected). All are welcome. Each month, we will discuss a new book, and we ask that each participant get the book and read it before the discussion. On February 19 at 12:15pm, we will discuss the book Touch by Rudy Rasmus. Powerful Words

"Who do you identify with, the rich man or the beggar Lazarus, or both? ...the 1% or the 99%? God wants us to find relationship, especially with people we find different from us, even detestable. God's Love is for the 100%." -- Steve Kim, Drew University, Student of Urban Ministry - January 22, 2012
